ISSUES
Issue work in the Gamaliel Network begins in our local organizations. An issue emerges from careful listening to the concerns and the values of members of constituent organizations. Local issues are determined by a colorful democratic process, reminiscent of a town meeting.
In the last 20 years the Gamaliel Network has learned that the issues that affect the members of an affiliates constituent organizations need to be address on a statewide and sometimes on a national basis.
The first issue that emerged as a national issue was the civil rights of immigrants. When leaders and organizers discovered that this was a widely held common issue, they persuaded the Board and Gamaliel Network leadership tables this was an issue requiring a national campaign. After the leadership tables and the local organizations of the Gamaliel network declared their commitment to work on this issue. The International Leadership Assembly affirmed Civil Rights of Immigrants as the first national issue of the Gamaliel Foundation.
Now those who seek recognition of a national issue follow the process adopted by the Gamaliel Council or presidents.
This process was used for the first time to declare the renewal of the voting right acts a national issue.
Because the issues facing our constituents in core cities are very similar often multiple organizations are working on similar issues. This give leaders and organization an opportunity to share resources and learning.
At the present time the Gamaliel Foundation Board has created the
Gamaliel Inclusion and Racial Equity Task
