For those of us who have organized extensively, protested ferociously, and prayed fervently for equity and equality in this country, including those that have gone on before us, it is frightening to admit that we are living in times where the rights that are ours by virtue of our humanity and by law are being compromised and threatened in this current socio-political season. Many will even argue that we have reverted back to pre-Civil Rights days.
When fast food workers in this country suffer from wage suppression and can’t get $15/hour, while in European countries like Denmark they can make the equivalent of $25.00 an hour for the same type of work, we are clearly fighting against a corporate will that is inflexible by choice. When an education policy leader in Washington does not see the value of public education without corporate influence, and when the highest court in the land can become a weaponized judiciary, it is clear to me that there is an insidious and concerted effort to roll back the protections of the Reconstruction Amendments (i.e., 13th, 14th, and 15th) of the U.S. Constitution, as well as successive civil rights legislation.
If there was ever a time to dig our heals in the ground, stand on the solid principles of our faith traditions, and demand that everyone in this country, brought here on their own or not, have access to opportunities that will allow them to flourish and enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, it is now! These times are calling for an even stronger Gamaliel Network—but we cannot reach the potential to fully meet that call without your continued support.
I want to thank you for what you have done to support our work in the past and humbly ask that you invest again during this critical moment. Now, as before, your contributions are tax deductible, one benefit—at least for now—that we all still enjoy. Let us make sure as we examine what we have already lost in this country that this benefit does not join that list.
Mid-term elections are coming up in the fall, and it is important that we elect a Congress who will not forget the importance of virtue and civil discourse in a democratic society. Let us make sure that our affiliates in states with 2018 gubernatorial races have the capacity to influence the debate with a transformational narrative that prioritizes the inherent dignity, worth, and rights of all human beings, and the necessity of creating and sustaining fully-inclusive community.
Your financial contribution will go a long way in helping this network engage in a war we did not start, but definitely plan to finish.
